Edison worked in a number of cities throughout the United States before arriving in Boston in 1868. Here Edison began to change his profession from telegrapher to inventor. He received his first patent on an electric vote recorder, a device intended for use by elected bodies such as Congress to speed the voting process. Edison resolved that in the future he would only invent things that he was certain the public would want.

The device made an immediate splash, though it took years before it could be produced and sold commercially. During the Civil War, Edison learned the emerging technology of telegraphy, and traveled around the country working as a telegrapher. But with the development of auditory signals for the telegraph, he was soon at a disadvantage as a telegrapher. The two-story garage built for Mr. Edison at his home, Glenmont, is a good example of a poured concrete building of the early twentieth century with a good deal of decorative work on the exterior (cornices and pilasters).

When their relationship ended, the house was purchased by new owners. In 1906, the Edison family bought the home and began using it as a Guest House. Famous guests included Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, President-elect Herbert Hoover, and many others. The Guest House includes a sitting room, dining room, kitchen, guest bedrooms and quarters for serving staff. Looking for a place near his contemplated new West Orange laboratories, Edison buys Glenmont in a distress sale, completely furnished, with barn and livestock, greenhouse, and all the grounds for $125,000.

The first machine that could record and reproduce sound created a sensation and brought Edison international fame. Edison toured the country with the tin foil phonograph, and was invited to the White House to demonstrate it to President Rutherford B. Hayes in April 1878. Spurred on by others’ work on improving the phonograph, he began working toward producing a commercial model. He also had the idea of linking the phonograph to a zoetrope, a device that strung together a series of photographs in such a way that the images appeared to be moving. Working with William K.L. Dickson, Edison succeeded in constructing a working motion picture camera, the Kinetograph, and a viewing instrument, the Kinetoscope, which he patented in 1891.

Through an arranged matchmaking operation, one of Edison’s good friends introduces Mina to Thomas in 1885, and in 1886, they marry. After years of heated legal battles with his competitors in the fledgling motion-picture industry, Edison had stopped working with moving film by 1918. In the interim, he had had success developing an alkaline storage battery, which he originally worked on as a power source for the phonograph but later supplied for submarines and electric vehicles. In 1881, he set up an electric light company in Newark, and the following year moved his family (which by now included three children) to New York. Thomas Edison may be best-known for inventing the light bulb, but with more than a thousand U.S. patents in his name, his reach as an innovator touches numerous aspects of modern society. From the telegraph to the phonograph to the tiny working parts of various machines and gadgets, he influenced and improved how people would communicate and experience the world for years to come.

City officials thought at first that the atomic plant plan would sail through federal and local reviews. In 1963, they entered into a tentative agreement with the Westinghouse Corp. to buy the generating equipment. The Atomic Energy Commission named a Boston company to design and build the reactor.
He also found to time to get married to Mary Stilwell and start a family. The development of the telegraph was the first step in the communication revolution, and the telegraph industry expanded rapidly in the second half of the 19th century. This rapid growth gave Edison and others like him a chance to travel, see the country, and gain experience.
Edison came to Louisville in 1866, at the young age of 19, to work as a telegraph key operator. With his skill at receiving telegraph messages, Thomas Edison had little difficulty landing a job with the Western Union located on Second and West Main Street -- about eight blocks from this home. Apparently, Louisville was also experiencing a shortage of telegraph operators at the time. From 1870 to 1875, Edison worked out of Newark, New Jersey, where he developed telegraph-related products for both Western Union Telegraph Company (then the industry leader) and its rivals.
Three weeks later, by November 16, the masts were in place and soon afterwards the pole lines and wires were strung along the streets leading to the masts. In reality, US electricity is supplied by a patchwork of mini-networks, each of which is disconnected from the others. So, while we’re able to generate enough power in aggregate — at least for now — surplus energy from one region can’t be routed to another that’s falling short. The history of how we ended up with a splintered grid — and how previous generations attempted to connect it — illuminates just how difficult a technical problem it is to solve. But it also points to an unlikely solution that brings us back to the earliest days of electrification. Edison formed an alliance among other major patent holders in the industry.
Out west, judges were much less tied up in Edison’s oppressive patent apparatus and were much more likely to rule with the independents than with the conglomerate. Even in instances where Southern California judges ruled with Edison, their rulings were hard to enforce given that cross-country travel was onerous and expensive. The atomic plant would be tucked between hillsides at the bottom of a deep ravine. Seawater pumped from pipes buried under Pacific Coast Highway and the beach and extending half a mile into the ocean would cool the reactor. In 2013, the Los Angeles City Council approved a plan to convert the facility from coal to natural gas by 2025, at an estimated cost of $500 million.

The courts, particularly in the Eastern United States, only seemed too happy to enforce their monopoly. Edison next undertook his greatest challenge, the development of a practical incandescent, electric light. The idea of electric lighting was not new, and a number of people had worked on, and even developed forms of electric lighting.

In Edison’s time, businessmen living in the park often commuted to New York, taking a train line at the bottom of the hill to Hoboken, NJ, and then a ferry across the Hudson to New York.

Without his cutthroat, and eventually illegal, business practices, there is a good chance that West Orange, New Jersey would still be home to the film industry and that Hollywood would just be another town outside of Los Angeles. Oh, and there was one other reason the movie industry made its way west. Los Angeles was far away from New Jersey—and Thomas Edison was in New Jersey. The National Park Service maintains a 1954 reproduction of the original Black Maria where visitors can imagine what it was like to step on the first film stage, before the world had any inkling of what it would someday mean to be a movie star. As we gear up for the summer blockbuster season, some movie lovers might be surprised to learn that a reproduction of the world’s first film studio is part of the U.S. In 1913, in hopes of ending MPPC’s crushing monopoly, William Fox of Fox Film Corporation, along with the owners of Paramount and Universal, brought a complaint to the U.S.

Sixteen high-voltage transmission lines connect Hoover Dam with its power market area. A third line extends to Los Angeles via the McCullough Switching Station, where the energy is stepped up to 500,000 volts. Other lines extend to Kingman, Arizona; Needles, California and nearby Boulder City. In 1876 Edison sold all his Newark manufacturing concerns and moved his family and staff of assistants to the small village of Menlo Park, twenty-five miles southwest of New York City. Edison established a new facility containing all the equipment necessary to work on any invention. This research and development laboratory was the first of its kind anywhere; the model for later, modern facilities such as Bell Laboratories, this is sometimes considered to be Edison's greatest invention.
It was known as the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC) or, more colloquially, the Edison Trust. The Trust included competing production company that Dickson founded, Biograph, which held its own camera patent; as well as Eastman Kodak, the biggest producer of raw film. Given how many patents the cartel covered, it was virtually impossible for any independent movie studio to make a film without being bombarded by copyright infringement lawsuits from the MPPS. Two hundred eighty-nine legal complaints were directed at Universal Studios alone.

Mrs. Edison managed all the house’s staff and hosted numerous visiting dignitaries at Glenmont. One of the oldest buildings in Fort Myers was on the site when Edison purchased the property from cattle baron Samuel Summerlin in 1885. The original “cracker” style house was used by cattlemen as they drove their herds South. Edison expanded the house, adding a kitchen, garage, and chauffeur’s quarters. Edison’s caretakers lived on the property all year long while maintaining the estate. Originally the Guest House was owned by a business partner of Thomas Edison.
Edison had very little formal education as a child, attending school only for a few months. He was taught reading, writing, and arithmetic by his mother, but was always a very curious child and taught himself much by reading on his own. Today, the brick buildings on Main Street in West Orange, NJ seem quiet, betraying little evidence of the research, development, and innovation of their heyday. Visitors can step back in time to Thomas Edison’s home and laboratory, when machines were run by belts and pulleys and music was played on phonographs. The electric light bulb wasn't Edison's favorite invention, but certainly his most famous. Our light bulb collection consists of many varied types of early light bulbs and you will notice many of them have pointed tip ends. The Edison estate resides in beautiful and historic Llewellyn Park, originally envisioned by Llewellyn Haskell in 1850 as a bucolic hillside refuge from the already teaming and exploding city populations of New York and Newark, NJ.
A magnificent semicircular conservatory graces the south side of the home. The construction of Glenmont includes over 157,000 bricks, and in excess of 10,000 pounds of iron and steel framing. A total of 94 exterior windows grace the building, 41 of them adorned with canvas awnings. Over the years, the Edison’s added 6 more bathrooms, mostly on the second floor, for a total room count of 29 and ½ . Thomas Edison received little formal education, and left school in 1859 to begin working on the railroad between Detroit and Port Huron, Michigan, where his family then lived.

Today, the Big Creek project generates nearly 4 billion kilowatt hours (KWh) per year – about 90 percent of SCE's total hydroelectric power, or about 20 percent of SCE's total generating capacity. Big Creek accounts for 12 percent of all the hydroelectric power produced in California.[5] The Big Creek reservoirs also provide irrigation and flood control benefits for the Central Valley, and are popular recreation areas. However, the project has had various environmental and social impacts, including the disruption of fish and animal migration, and the flooding of historical sites and traditional Native American lands.
While working on the phonograph, Edison began working on a device that, "does for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear", this was to become motion pictures. Edison first demonstrated motion pictures in 1891, and began commercial production of "movies" two years later in a peculiar looking structure, built on the laboratory grounds, known as the Black Maria. Like the electric light and phonograph before it, Edison developed a complete system, developing everything needed to both film and show motion pictures. Edison's initial work in motion pictures was pioneering and original. However, many people became interested in this third new industry Edison created, and worked to further improve on Edison's early motion picture work.
When Harvey and Daeida Wilcox purchased 120 acres of farmland northwest of Los Angeles in 1886, they had plans to live a quiet life on their ranch that they called Hollywood. The prohibitionist couple’s dream of a fig farm faltered just one year after their purchase, and as a result they turned to an industry that had never failed them before — real estate. The Wilcoxes divided up their land and sold it off quickly to like-minded buyers, envisioning a sober and deeply religious community.
The two-story riverfront home was built in the Craftsman architectural style. Built in 1910, the 50′ x 20′ swimming pool is believed to have been constructed using Edison Portland Cement and was one of the first residential pools. In a 1928 remodel, the Pool House with changing rooms and a shower, and Tea House were added.
In 1878, Edison focused on inventing a safe, inexpensive electric light to replace the gaslight—a challenge that scientists had been grappling with for the last 50 years. Morgan and the Vanderbilt family, Edison set up the Edison Electric Light Company and began research and development. SCE also invested in improving civic and educational facilities in its company towns. Nonetheless, continued difficult conditions led to a 40 percent monthly turnover rate in the workforce.
There were therefore many contributors to the swift development of motion pictures beyond the early work of Edison. By the late 1890s, a thriving new industry was firmly established, and by 1918 the industry had become so competitive that Edison got out of the movie business all together. Known as the “Wizard of Menlo Park,” for the New Jersey town where he did some of his best-known work, Edison had become one of the most famous men in the world by the time he was in his 30s. In addition to his talent for invention, Edison was also a successful manufacturer who was highly skilled at marketing his inventions—and himself—to the public. At the time, movie-making was centered on the East Coast, specifically in the New Jersey/New York area.

The program has existed since at least the early 1960s when Jane Hartsook invited Peter Voulkos to teach and work in the Pottery, but was relaunched in its current iteration September 2015, when Ghada Amer was invited to be a long-term resident in our studios. The show includes artworks, archival materials, and surveillance instruments such as mammoth plate cameras and drones to portray a region of natural beauty that has also been the site of mining operations, scientific research, and military bases. Featured artists include Carleton Watkins, Margaret Bourke-White, David Maisel, Michael Light, and Steven Yazzie, among others. Over the course of six decades, photographer Kwame Brathwaite, who passed away last year, chronicled the breadth of African-American life and culture, creating what are now some of the most iconic images of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. That said, we are committed to keeping these spaces functional and safe during the period of fundraising and staged work, so we have and will continue to spend operational revenue on matters of operational priority and need. We are working with Blauuw kilns, an Amsterdam-based company, to construct two new custom-built, state-of-the-art kilns. Construction time for the kilns is months after receipt of deposit, so we expect to receive them sometime around April – August 2025. The funds needed to complete this portion of the project are raised and earmarked for this purpose, so the installation will be prioritized upon delivery. A few years ago, Malene Barnett, who had found success with her textile and rug collections, began feeling creatively tapped out. “I’m an artist, first and foremost,” says Barnett, who studied art at SUNY Purchase before transferring to FIT and settling into textile and surface design, which proved the basis of a 20-year career.

“And it had come to a point where I was translating other people’s vision with the carpets. In 1963, Greenwich House received a federal grant to establish a Counseling Center, the first walk-in, outpatient counseling center for drug treatment in New York. Twenty years later, in 1987, Greenwich House founded the AIDS Mental Health Project, a first-of-its-kind, which was soon followed by the Children’s Safety Project to provide prevention, counseling and treatment services for children suffering from trauma and abuse. In 1991, primary care service for HIV patients began – the first, and for many years, the only services in the city specifically addressing the needs of those living with HIV/AIDS. Eventually Yarbrough grew restless, leaving the trio in 1977 and returning in 1980, only to depart again after a few months of touring in which the old group tensions arose again.
Pottery Classes
The studios at Greenwich House Pottery – Chelsea are equipped with a handbuilding classroom, a throwing classroom, and a mixed-use studio space, three electric kilns, a slab roller, and an extruder. This studio specializes in mid-range firings, offering two clay bodies and a large selection of cone 6 glazes. We are pleased to offer the Greenwich House Pottery Residency Program, which is designed to support artists’ projects and to increase awareness around the importance of creative engagement with ceramics. Bloch explained that Greenwich House is, in fact, three historic buildings, 16 Jones Street, 46 Barrow Street, and 27 Barrow Street (headquarters), that provide 60,000 square feet under management. The organization has an additional six sites in the West Village and downtown Manhattan, and all together manages 150 full time employees and 300 part time seasonal staff and faculty. Half of the Greenwich House’s work is health and human services, including five older adult centers, and the other half is the arts and cultural classes, the nursery and summer schools.
Programs
Illustrious students included Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock, the latter of whom worked there as a janitor to offset the cost of classes. Throughout the century, there were outstanding leaders and directors of the Pottery School who led the community for significant periods of time and left their marks. Greenwich Street Potters for example was for a time a real working studio that earned revenue by creating pottery and ceramics for famous people’s houses and gardens, and a display at the 1939 World’s Fair. Then priorities changed again and it became more of a place for artists, community and classes with top teachers and mentors and visiting artists. “It is all about the importance of materials and learning, and Pottery offers people the opportunity to explore the world and their lives outside of the factories and workplaces. “There’s just an explosion of people working in clay or wanting to,” says Fabio J. Fernández, the director of GHP, which offers classes, an artist residency programme and exhibition space at 16 Jones Street.
Good design for the way we eat, live, and connect
In 2003, the Barrow Street Theatre began with notable and award-winning plays and in 2019, Ars Nova made Greenwich House Theatre their new downtown home, featuring off-Broadway productions. In our studios at 16 Jones Street we offer 38 adult classes, children’s after-school classes, year-round Master Workshops and an intensive summer wheel-throwing class for teens. In this show, Craft Contemporary showcases the work of the 3B Collective, a group of multidisciplinary LA-based artists who explore cultural commodification, labor, migration, and hybrid identities. Highway Hypnosis gathers murals, assemblages, textiles, ceramics, and installations made in conjunction with artisans located in areas where collective members have familial roots, including Oaxaca, Jalisco, El Salvador, and Baja California. These collaborative works challenge the false binary of craft and fine art, while highlighting networks of cultural and social exchange. Currently Greenwich House is relaunching a fundraising campaign ($1 to $3 million) for the Pottery. After more than 100 years in operation, they are still working with 16th century tools. The reputation and work emanating from the Pottery is resulting in long waiting lists. Greenwich House is also seeking to expand its music and theater and performing arts spaces, install sound proofing and modernization, and come up with various ways to support aspiring professional artists giving them the time and space to practice their instruments.

The studio at Eighth Avenue and West 14th Street will open in early 2024 and offer 30 new classes each season. Almost everyone in the US ceramics world has passed through its doors at one time as a teacher, resident or student, including Peter Voulkos, Toshiko Takaezu, Betty Woodman, David Salle, Simone Leigh and Kathy Butterly. Founded on Thanksgiving Day in 1902, Greenwich House opened its doors as a settlement house to help New York’s increasing immigrant population adjust to life in a new country. The demand for music education was so high that Greenwich House expanded its Music School to a new building.
Greenwich House also operates four senior centers, a senior health and consultation center providing mental and physical health treatment, a methadone maintenance clinic, chemical dependency program and all-girls non-competitive basketball league. Within Greenwich House Pottery is the Jane Hartsook Gallery.[13] The gallery was named in honor of Jane Hartsook, former Pottery director. Greenwich House arts programming is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. In addition to benefiting artists and students, these improvements will reduce the environmental footprint, making the Pottery a more accessible, energy-efficient, and responsible neighbor. The Shape the Future capital campaign will raise $5 million for critical updates and enhancements so this community arts space can thrive for years to come.

The first four phases can be completed in some manner while the building remains operational, but when we begin phase 5, the building will close. Closing the building is necessary so that the work can be carried out safely and expeditiously.
Emboldened by her new experience, Barnett endeavored to create a body of work at Greenwich House that marries experimentation and historic reference. In tandem, Fernández is leading a $7m capital campaign to modernise and expand GHP’s 1928 Colonial Revival townhouse on Jones Street. Our programs
To achieve program goals, we will need a continued strong partnership with Mecklenburg County DSS which may also include a court program that will help us pilot phase 2 of the program. In addition, we also need strong leadership with lived experience as a birth family to ensure we are being intentional and thoughtful in our program design. This program expansion would also include the need for a new staff member and additional oversight and navigating to community resources that extend beyond the mission of FVC to help families sustain permanency. Reunifying families is a vulnerable population but there are risks involved including safety for our team and the children we serve.

A recent Foster Village survey of more than 100 of its client families found that 75% of caregivers are likely to continue fostering in 2022 because of the organization’s services. All said they depend on Foster Village to learn how to access resources and navigate the system. When a family decides to foster a child, it can be scary and overwhelming.

My experience in the classroom had a lot to do with why I became a foster parent. I had students who were in foster care, living with extended family or foster parents. Watching grandparents struggle to parent again, or having a conversation with kids and not getting a clear picture of where they were living, or with whom … changed me. Tony and I started gathering information about foster care before we started a family. COVID delivered a blow to an already strained foster care system. Therapy and support service availability dwindled.

The social worker brought me to the hospital where the child was, and I met with police officers, doctors, and the father—a very out-of-body experience.

The child plays in the trauma-informed playroom and assists their new caregiver in choosing the items they want to go into their Welcome Pack. The foster family learns of additional trainings and events that will help them adjust to their new reality and engage further in the village of the foster community. Most families foster for less than a year, citing burnout and lack of support as the reason they stop. At the same time, 85% of people who are not foster parents say they care about vulnerable children and want to help. With the launch of Project SOOTHe in 2020, we addressed the critical lack of services and long therapy waitlists.

Foster Village Charlotte connects families caring for children in foster care to each other and to ongoing, holistic support. Our approach includes support groups, workshops, one-on-one encouragement, foster parent mentorships and family gatherings. We build a peer-driven community that is facilitated by licensed therapists and experts in the field. A comfortable place to connect with people who "get it". Registration for all of these opportunities take place through our bi-weekly newsletter, website, and through our closed Facebook group community. FVC acts as a bridge across licensing agencies by providing families with responsive trauma-informed training, especially those topics not covered in their certification classes.
All caregivers are welcome to attend and we are able to provide credit hours toward re-licensing. FVC also hosts informal gatherings, Parents Night Out and social/play groups. Within 48 hours, FVC provides a week’s worth of all new essential and comfort items to ensure children have what they need. When caregivers say yes to keeping siblings together, FVC provides larger necessities to ensure each child has a comfortable first night sleep.

They drop these necessities off within hours, with a card that includes information about how to engage the Village in the days ahead. As the project kicked off, the team conducted the “14 Attributes of a Healthy Nonprofit” assessment to gauge FVC’s organizational health and structure. Simultaneously, they surveyed board members to create a roles and responsibility matrix, identifying skill set gaps within the board. By February, the team delved into reviewing and reimagining FVC’s strategic plan, marking the 15th meeting and over 40 invested volunteer hours by SVP Partners by the end of March. I was still working full time, I had a new child, and I really wanted to focus my energy on Foster Village.
